Phenakistoscopes: Analog Illusions
Exhibited at the La Culture TLV Bazaar in 2023, this project is the result of my research into the roots of moving media and the mechanics of perception. The Phenakistoscope was the first device to create a fluent illusion of motion, and I wanted to explore how these early analog techniques shaped the way we experience movement. My work bridges the gap between traditional and modern storytelling by combining computer animation and digital illustration with physical interaction.
I modified an Ikea "Snudda" (Lazy Susan) to serve as a manual base, allowing viewers to physically spin the prints to activate the animation. The three disks I created utilize high-contrast, black-and-white graphics—ranging from celestial motifs to rhythmic character loops—to reinterpret a historical medium through a contemporary, digital lens.
